Grinding is a metal-cutting operation using synthetic abrasive grains. Grinding is a fabrication operation that removes the unwanted material from metals using a grinding wheel. This extensive process is automated when the output is required on a large scale.
Grinding is a process well known for its accurate finishing. However, this process is efficient even during mass production. It has remarkable applications on very hard metals. For over a period of time, Metal grinding was the only process adopted for machining hardened steels.
During this process, a binder in the grinding wheel holds the abrasive grains. When the grinding wheel is brought near the work surface, the abrasive grains starts removing the unwanted metal parts. Thereby, the metal is deformed into the desired metal shape.
The most common abrasives used in the grinding process are Silicon carbide, Aluminium oxide, Diamond, Cubic iron nitride, etc. The grinding wheel acts as the cutting tool in this operation. This surface generation process has been practiced since ages. It is considered as an efficient method to cut metal when compared to other processes like turning and milling.

Surface grinding :
Surface grinding employs a grinding wheel for machining of metal surfaces. As the name indicates, machining is performed on the surface level of the metal. Thereby, a flat surface is created on the work piece with respect to the dimensions placed as a requirement.
Form grinding and Profile grinding:
In Form grinding process, the shape of the grinding wheel is similar to the desired end-product. This operation consists of grinding wheels that are designed to impart their shape on the work piece.
During Profile grinding, the intricate details in the work piece are ground using pre-set parameters.
Cylindrical grinding :
Cylindrical grinding refers to operations that involve machining of work pieces into cylindrical shapes. Based on requirement of cylindrical grinding outputs, the process is classified into following operations:
This grinding is preferred when high amount of metal particles has to be removed from the work piece. The operation is carried out in a single pass. Its types are as follows:
Removal of a thin layer of the metal surface using a super abrasive grinding disk is known as peel grinding.
Ultra-high-speed grinding: This grinding process is used for high-speed processes. This process can be performed for grinding operations that require high spindle momentum and capacity.
Centreless grinding involves the work piece on a work-rest and between 2 wheels. The 2 wheels rotate in the same direction, but at different speeds. The larger wheel grinds the metal surface while the smaller wheel rotates the work piece for grinding by the larger wheel. Types: Through-feed, End-feed & In-feed
Electro chemical grinding:
In this process, the work-metal is positively charged, and the grinding wheel is negatively charged. As electric current passes, the negative ions of the wheel deplete the positive ions in the work-metal. This removes the chips from the metal and deforms it.
Pre-grinding: This process is performed on tools before they are employed in operations like welding.
