Metal Fabrication Suppliers- Global Sourcing considerations

Article Description : This article titled ‘Metal Fabrication Suppliers-Global Sourcing considerations’ explains the process and its types. This information is essential for a professional before he/ she decides to involve in supplier sourcing.

About Metal Fabrication process :
In Engineering, there are a various process for manufacturing metal products using different metal resources. But a process that uniquely uses only raw/semi-finished materials to manufacture metal parts is known as Metal fabrication.

In this process, the raw/semi-finished metals are cut, bent or assembled to form standardized metal components . This process does not involve usage of already existing metal parts to manufacture new ones.

Fabrication also comprises other metalworking processes such as welding, black smithing, finishing, etc. The raw materials are usually plate metal, welding wire, sheet metals that are formed or expanded. There are various process types to fabricate a metal.

They include :
• Cutting • Machining • Welding • Folding • Stamping • Bending • Shearing • Forging • Sawing • Rolling • Straightening,etc.

Cutting :
It is the process of removal of unwanted metal parts using sharp tools.

Machining:
Machining is a metal-working operation in which raw metals are cut to desired shapes to serve industrial requirements. It is a subtraction process that involves removal of unwanted metal parts (known as ‘chips’) using different techniques.

Welding :
Welding is the process of joining two work-metals by heat treatment followed by cooling down process.

Folding :
The process in which the work-metal is folded at a pre-fixed angle is known as Folding.

Stamping :
It is the deformation of work metal caused by placing it in a stamping press. A tool and die thereby reshapes the sheet metal into the desired form by application of pressure.

Bending :
In this Metal fabrication process, the work-metals are bent along a certain axis to form a prefixed angle.

Shearing :
It is a metal-cutting process that uses shear stress caused by dies without forming chips and undergoing plastic deformation.

Forging :
It is a metal forming process in which compressing forces of dies are used to reshape a metal. The metal finally acquires the shape imparted by the dies.

Sawing :
The process in which the unwanted pieces of work-metals are cut using saws to form a desired shape.

Rolling :
This process uses rolls to deform a work-metal. It reduces the metal thickness by passing the work-metal through two rollers and compressing it by heat treatment.

Straightening :
This metal fabrication process changes un-uniform regions of work-metals into straight surfaces by application of pressure.

Though the types extend with newer process developments, the selection of the right process depends on many factors. They include requirement as well as the design and material used for fabrication.

For Example, rolling process is implemented when the end-product is expected to have circular/round surface areas. Whereas, bending process is implemented when the end-product is expected to have bends or levelled angles of pre-fixed measures.

Supplier scouting considerations :
In order for any industry to thrive, economic strength is very important. Recently, the industries have started to diversify in terms of sales. This is due to a demand of consistency required to maintain the growth trend like the previous year.

When considering the sourcing process, many companies work on widening their customer base. They try on different strategies. A customer usually aims to find suppliers for his products or services within a short span.

As the Metal Fabrication sector is cyclic in nature, the supplier networks are interlinked. In this scenario, finding authentic supplier information among a wide range of choices becomes a challenge for the customers. With these variable customer demands, experts from procurement organizations have suggestions for optimal sourcing :

  • Companies that make modern investments are sustainable. Customers must look for such resources for efficient supply chain management.
  • Choose reliable suppliers who can optimize their manufacturing processes in accordance with the changing demands.
  • Opt for suppliers who exhibit high capacity production of Metalworking goods or services.
  • Select suppliers who provide the best cost among other competitive suppliers.
  • Supplier who adapt to collective metal fabrication services that include laser cutting, milling machining, sheet metal fabrication, etc.
  • Suppliers who are capable of performing efficient risk management during volatile economic conditions.
  • Suppliers who aim to deliver high quality output within deadline.
  • Look resources based on solid supplier performances during challenging scenarios.
